There were 2 options regarding which city in the Pernambuco state would be a 2014 World Cup host city, Recife or Historic city Olinda. Eventually the city São Lourenco da Mata was chosen as a compromise, which made it cheaper to construct a completely new stadium.
Although many people rarely mention the city São Lourenco da Mata, Arena, Pernambuco´s exact location is in this city, which is 1 of Recife’s suburbs and is around 25 km away from the Recife city center.
The stadium’s name comes from the state Pernambuco, The stadium is also called Itaipava Arena Pernambuco due to a naming right sponsorship lasting at least for 10 years. Itaiva is a Brazilian brewery owned by Grupo Petrópolis, and it cost them around 220 million USD to make this sponsorship happen.

Arena Pernambuco is 1 of the completely new arenas built especially for the 2014 World Cup. Construction started in the year 2010 and was finalized in April 2013. The arena opened its doors officially on the 22nd of May.
Arena Pernambuco contains a power plant that generates 1 MW of installed capacity, and is part of a program of research and development regarding solar power in Brazil. When the plant is not used for the arena, it is able to generate energy which meets an average consumption of 6000 consumers. Another indication that shows emphasis on sustainability is the usage of natural ventilation and the building site’s own sewage station.
Like other World cup stadiums, Arena Pernambuco in Recife has the objective of being awarded with the LEED sustainable certificate, issued by the non-governmental organisation Green Building Council (CGB).

There is even going to be a residential area which will include around 5000 homes. The whole project including the arena and the area needs to result in a boom and expansion of Recife and that area in particular, which is considered economically poor.
