Colombia is the 14th country to have qualified for the World Cup Brazil on the 11th of October 2013. The decisive match was against Chile which ended in a 3-3 draw. This score was enough for the World Cup 2014 Colombia national team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. Player Teófilo Gutiérrez scored the first goal and Radamel Falcao scored 2 penalties. The match that really mattered though was Ecuador against Uruguay. There had to be a winner in order for Colombia to secure their spot in the 2014 World Cup. No draw had to be played. Fortunately for Colombia there was a winner which was Ecuador. Colombia ended up on the 2nd position below Argentina in the qualification ranking, and made it relatively easy to the World Cup.

Worst Performance

1962 – Group stage: This is the only World Cup where Colombia won 0 matches and therefore ended up on the bottom of group 1.

Did You Know Colombia:

  • Has the following nickname: Los Cafeteros (the coffee growers)
  • Has a long time rivalry with neighbours Ecuador and Venezuela
  • Has a unique ‘based on respect’ rivalry with Argentina
  • Had its strongest period or golden era in the early 90s
  • Midfielder Marcos Coll has scored the only olympic goal (goal scored directly from a corner) in World Cup history, against legendary Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin in the 1962 World Cup
  • Is responsible for 1 of the biggest comeback to draw in World Cup history by changing a negative 3-0 score into 4-4 (against Soviet Union in Chile ’62)
  • Legendary goalkeeper René Higuita who is known for the famous scorpion kick, made an unfortunate mistake in the 1990 World Cup Round of 16 match against Cameroon, which is partly the reason why Colombia was eliminated
  • Was 1 of the favourite teams in the 1994 World Cup, but against all odds they were eliminated in the first round
  • Centre back Andrés Escobar was murdered on July 2 1994 and it is believed that an own goal scored in the 1994 World Cup group match against USA is the reason. It is believed the end score (2-1) caused huge losses for Colombia’s drug lords
  • Is a seed country in the 2014 World Cup, meaning Colombia has been kept apart from other seed (top) countries which are placed in different groups
  • Will be based in Cotia, São Paulo during the 2014 World Cup
