World Cup 2014 Oceania Qualifications

World Cup 2014 Oceania Qualifications

The World Cup 2014 Oceania qualifications for the OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) countries started on the 22nd of November 2011 and finished on the 20th of November 2013. Of the 14 OFC members, 11 entered the qualification rounds. Tuvalu, Niue and Kiribati were not allowed to enter, since they are FIFA members only and not OFC members. There were no direct qualifiers. The OFC is the only FIFA confederation that does not have a guaranteed spot in a World Cup. New Zealand had a chance to earn a World Cup ticket by winning the Intercontinental play-offs.

World Cup 2014 Oceania Qualifications Round 1

The first round consisted of the 4 lowest ranked OFC countries. The countries had to play a (single) round-robin tournament, which meant each country played against all the other countries once. Each match was played in Apia, the capital city of Samoa. Only the top country of the group advanced to the 2nd round.

World Cup 2014 Oceania Qualifications Round 2

The 2nd group consisted of the 7 top ranked countries including the winner of  the first Round. All 8 countries played the 2012 OFC Nations Cup in the Solomon Islands. The 4 Semi-Finalists (the top 2 teams from each group in the group stage) advanced to the 3rd round.

World Cup 2014 Oceania Qualifications Round 3

The 4 Semi-Finalists of the 2012 OFC Nations Cup played a double round-robin tournament. This means each country had to play against the other countries twice on a home and away basis. The top country advanced to the intercontinental play-offs. An interesting factor is that the top country of Round 3 is different than the country which won the Nations Cup (Tahiti).

World Cup 2014 Intercontinental Play-Offs

The winner of the 3rd round New Zealand advanced to the intercontinental play-offs. They played the intercontinental play-offs against the 4th place CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) country which was Mexico. 2 legs (two-legged tie format) were played on November 13 and 20 2013, 1 home and 1 away.

New Zealand lost the play-offs due to a lower aggregate score, and therefore will not play their 3rd World Cup in Brazil this year.

For the 16th time in World Cup history, no OFC country will join the World Cup. Only 4 times an OFC country has qualified for a World Cup:

  • 1974: Australia
  • 1982: New Zealand
  • 2006: Australia
  • 2010: New Zealand

Remember that Australia is not part of the OFC anymore. Since the year 2006 Australia is part of the AFC (Asian Football Confederation).
