World Cup 2014 America Qualifications

The World Cup 2014 America qualifications for the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) direct qualifiers started on the 15th of June 2011 and finished on the 15th of October 2013. On this day the last CONCACAF country Honduras has qualified directly for the 2014 World Cup Brazil.

Of the 41 CONCACAF members, 35 entered the qualification rounds. Bonaire, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten were not allowed to enter, since they are CONCACAF members only and not FIFA members. Only 3 American teams qualified directly for the World Cup. Only 1 country Mexico qualified indirectly on the 20th of November 2013.

The 4 CONCACAF countries which have qualified directly and indirectly for the 2014 World Cup Brazil are in order:

World Cup 2014 America Qualifications Round 1

The first round consisted of the 10 lowest ranked CONCACAF teams (numbers 26-35). The highest ranked teams of the 10 played against the lowest ranked teams of the 10. Each team had to play the two-legged tie format. This means 2 legs were played on a home and away basis. The teams with the best aggregate score advanced to the next round.

St. Lucia advanced to the next round due to the away goals rule. Away goals count double.

World Cup 2014 America Qualifications Round 2

The 2nd round consisted of the 19 higher ranked CONCACAF teams (numbers 7-25) plus the 5 winners from the first round. The teams were divided in 6 groups of 4 teams. The double round robin format was used, meaning the teams played against each other twice on a home and away basis. Only the top team of each group advanced to the next round.

World Cup 2014 America Qualifications Round 3

The third round consisted of the top 6 ranked CONCACAF teams plus the 6 winners of the 2nd round. The 12 teams in total were divided in 3 groups of 4 teams. A team played twice against all the other teams in their group on a home and away basis (the double round robin format). The 2 top teams per group advanced to the next round.

Jamaica and Guatemala contained equal points. However Jamaica advanced to the next round since they have a goal difference (GF minus GA) of 3 and Guatemala a goal difference of 1.

World Cup 2014 America Qualifications Round 4

In the 4th round only 6 countries were left. All countries had to play against each other twice (again the double round robin format), on a home and away basis. The top 3 countries automatically qualified for the 2014 World Cup. The number 4 in the list had to play the intercontinental play-offs against the first OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) country.

World Cup 2014 Intercontinental Play-Offs

Number 4 of the list Mexico played the intercontinental play-offs against the first OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) country which was New Zealand. 2 legs (two-legged tie format) were played on November 13 and 20 2013, 1 home and 1 away. Mexico has the highest aggregate score so they will be off to Brazil for the World Cup.
