  • Forward Cristiano Ronaldo was accused in the 2006 World Cup Quarter-Final match against England of purposely influencing the referee to give the red card to player Wayne Rooney, which was considered a disgrace and unleashed the anger of many English fans
  • Goalkeeper Ricardo has the record of most saves in a penalty shootout: 3 in the 2006 World Cup match against England
  • Played against France in 2006 for the first time in World Cup history
  • Coach Carlos Queiroz was widely criticized for implementing a cautious play style in the 2010 World Cup where players had to stay close to the back, and was not always appreciated by the players either
