World Cup 2014 Asia Qualifications

The World Cup 2014 Asia qualifications for the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) direct qualifiers started on the 29th of June 2011 and finished on the 18th of June 2013. On this day the last AFC country South Korea has qualified directly for the 2014 World Cup Brazil. Of the in total 47 AFC national associations, 43 participated in the qualification rounds. Brunei, Bhutan and Guam didn’t participate. Northern Mariana Islands is a AFC member but not a FIFA member, and was therefore not allowed to participate.

Only 4 Asian teams qualified directly for the 2014 World Cup Brazil which are in order:

 1. Japan

World Cup 2014 Asia Qualifications Round 1

The first round consisted of the 16 lowest ranked AFC teams (numbers 28-43). The teams played the two-legged tie format which means 2 legs were played on a home and away basis. The highest ranked teams of the 16 played against the lowest ranked teams of the 16. The teams with the best aggregate score advanced to the next round.

Malaysia advanced to the next round due to the away goals rule. Away goals count double.

World Cup 2014 Asia Qualifications Round 2

The 2nd round consisted of the 22 higher ranked AFC teams (numbers 6-27) plus the 8 winners of the first round. The teams also played a two-legged tie format which means 2 teams played against each other twice on a home and away basis. The teams with the best aggregate score advanced to the next round.

World Cup 2014 Asia Qualifications Round 3

The third round consisted of the top 5 ranked AFC teams plus the 15 winners of the 2nd round. The 20 teams in total were divided in 5 groups of 4 teams. A team played twice against all the other teams in their group (the double round robin format) on a home and away basis. The 2 top teams per group advanced to the next round.

World Cup 2014 Asia Qualifications Round 4

The 10 winners of Round 3 were divided in 2 groups of 5 teams. The double round robin format was used again, meaning the teams had to play against the other group members twice on a home and away basis. The top 2 teams of both groups qualified automatically for the 2014 World Cup. The 2 third place teams had to advance to the next round: the continental play-offs.

South Korea and Uzbekistan contained equal points. However South Korea qualified directly for the World Cup since they have a goal difference (GF minus GA) of 6 and Uzbekistan a goal difference of 5. Uzbekistan was very close to qualify directly for their first World Cup.

World Cup 2014 Asia Qualifications Round 5

The 2 third place teams of the 4th round were Uzbekistan and Jordan. They played the continental play-offs against each other. 2 legs (two-legged tie format) were played in September, 1 home and 1 away. The winner was eventually Jordan and went on to the next and final round: the intercontinental play-offs.

Again, Uzbekistan was not lucky. The 2nd leg ended in a penalty shootout which was won by Jordan (9-8). Therefore Jordan advanced.

World Cup 2014 Intercontinental Play-Offs

Jordan played the intercontinental play-offs against the 5th CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) country which was Uruguay. 2 legs (two-legged tie format) were played on November 13 and 20 2013, 1 home and 1 away. The winner could finally prepare themselves for the 2014 World Cup.

It was Uruguay that won the intercontinental play-offs with a higher aggregate score. This means Jordan will not play their first World Cup in 2014 and no 5th AFC country will participate.
