Algeria is the 26th country to have qualified for the World Cup Brazil on the 19th of November 2013. Algeria was 1 of the 10 CAF countries to play the continental play-offs. Their opponent was Burkina Faso which has never participated before in a World Cup. It was a close call for the World Cup 2014 Algeria national team to qualify. In their first match of the play-off Algeria lost with 2-3. Sofiane Feghouli and Carl Medjani scored for Algeria. But since the 2nd match was won with 1-0 which was scored by Madjid Bougherra, Algeria qualified. The first match was an away match and away goals count double. This meant although the aggregate score was 3-3, Algeria has scored in total a value of 5 goals and Burkina Faso only 3 goals. Algeria can now try to reach at least the 2nd round in their 4th World Cup.

Best Performance

1982 – Group stage: Algeria almost made it to the 2nd round. 2 matches were won against West Germany and Chile, but was eliminated due to the goal difference. Algeria had 4 points together with West Germany and Austria, but  Algeria had the smallest goal difference (0).

Worst Performance

1986 – Group stage: Algeria ended up finishing last in group D with a goal difference of -4. This was lower than the -2 goal difference in the 2010 World Cup.

Did You Know Algeria:

  • Has the following nicknames: Les Fennecs, Fennec Foxes, the Greens and Foxes
  • Has a long time rivalry with Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt
  • Caused 1 of the greatest World cup upsets by beating West Germany with 2-1 in a 1982 World Cup group match
  • Won 2 1982 World Cup group matches, but still didn’t advance to the next round
  • Didn’t advance in the 1982 World Cup since West Germany won with only 1-0 against Austria, however both teams seemed to agree very easy on this result early in the match
  • Became outraged due to above match where it seemed the players did not have the intention to change the 1-0 score, resulting in speculation of a mutual agreement between both West Germany and Austria
  • Is the only country in World Cup history (since the rule of 2 countries advancing to the 2nd round),  to have failed advancing to the next round while having won 2 of the 3 group matches
  • Is the first African country to have qualified for a World Cup twice in a row (1982,1986)
  • Took 24 years to qualify for their 3rd World Cup in 2010
  • Will be based in Sorocaba, São Paulo during the 2014 World Cup
