World Cup 2014 Africa Qualifications

The World Cup 2014 Africa qualifications for the CAF (Confederation of African Football) qualifiers started on the 11th of November 2011 and finished on the 19th of November 2013. Only 5 CAF countries could qualify. Of the in total 56 CAF national associations, 52 participated in the qualification rounds. Mauritania and South Sudan didn’t participate. Réunion and Zanzibar were not allowed to enter the qualification rounds, since they are not FIFA members, only CAF members. Only 10 CAF countries had a shot  to win the continental play-offs which were played in October and November 2013.

The following 5 CAF countries qualified for the 2014 World Cup Brazil which are in order:

4. Ghana

World Cup 2014 Africa Qualifications Round 1

The first round consisted of the 24 lowest ranked CAF countries. The countries played against each other twice, on a home and away basis (two-legged tie format). The teams with the best aggregate score advanced to the 2nd round.

Mauritius had to play against Libya but withdrew. Therefore Libya automatically advanced to the 2nd round.

World Cup 2014 Africa Qualifications Round 2

The 2nd round consisted of the 28 top ranked CAF countries, plus the 12 winners from the first round. The countries were put in 10 groups of 4 countries and a double round robin format had to be played. This means a team in a group had to play against all the other group members twice on a home and away basis. Only the top team per group advanced to the 3rd round: the continental play-offs.

World Cup 2014 Africa Qualifications Round 3

The 3rd round consisted of the 10 winners of the 2nd round. The teams played the continental play-offs on October 12-15 and on November 16-19 2013. As always, the play-offs (two-legged tie format) consists of 2 matches: home and away. The 5 winners with the best aggregate score advanced to destination Brazil for the 2014 World cup.

Algeria, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Cameroon and Ghana ended up being the winners since they achieved the highest aggregate score.

Algeria goes to the 2014 World Cup Brazil since in the first leg they scored 2 away goals in the capital of Burkina Faso. Away goals count double.
