56 of the 64 World Cup matches have been concluded! Yes the World Cup is more than 50% finished and there are only 8 matches to go! Unfortunately a World Cup goes to fast.
We have the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, match for the third place and the Final. All the number 2 teams of their groups are eliminated: group A Mexico, group B Chile, group C Greece, group D Uruguay, group E Switzerland, group F Nigeria, group G USA and group H Algeria.
This means the 8 group winners are still in the race: Brazil, Netherlands, Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Argentina, Germany and Belgium.
Today we have 2 Quarter-Finals:
- France – Germany
- Brazil – Colombia
France – Germany
Both teams have met each other 3 times in World Cup history. In the 1958, 1982 and 1986 World Cup. The French defeated the Germans only once, in the 1958 match for the third place. French World Cup top scorer Just Fontaine scored 4 goals of his in total 13 goals scored in one single World Cup!
The other 2 times France wasn’t that lucky. In the 80s, West Germany defeated France 2 times in the Semi-Final. The 1982 Semi-Final match ended in a penalty shootout which Germany won with 5-4. The match however is known for the most shocking foul in World Cup history. Unfortunately for France, they lost again 4 years later in the 1986 World Cup Semi-Final with 2-0.
The big question is will France have their revenge?
Brazil – Colombia
Both teams never met in World Cup history!! Brazil however got eliminated only once by South American country. This was against Argentina in the 1990 World Cup Round of 16. Claudio Caniggia scored the 1-0 which was enough to eliminate Brazil.
